PRESIDENT'S WELCOME
Dear Colleagues:
On behalf of the Southern California
Caucus of the Pacific Coast Surgical Association,
I want to extend
a personal invitation for you to attend the 79th Annual
Meeting of the PCSA, to be held President’s Day
weekend, February 15-18, 2008, at the world famous
Hotel del Coronado in San Diego.
As it has been the tradition in recent
years, the meeting will begin Friday, February 15,
with the New
Member’s Dinner at Sea World. We will be treated
to a reception in the spectacular “Wild Arctic” attraction
where members and their families will encounter polar
bears, beluga whales, walruses, and seals. The dinner
will be held at the Nautilus pavilion and the Wild
Arctic attraction will be open during and after dinner
for guests. The scientific sessions will begin Saturday
morning and end with the Business Meeting at noon on
Monday, February 18. Saturday evening will be free
for members to enjoy with family and friends. The golf
and tennis tournaments are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
The President’s Reception and Dinner will be
held at the Hotel del Coronado on Sunday evening.
The Program Committee chaired by Dr.
Fred Weaver, has issued the first call for abstracts
in anticipation
of an outstanding scientific program. The poster presentation
session will again be an electronic presentation in
keeping with the success of this new format at this
year’s meeting. The President’s Forum presentation
will be “The Future of Surgery in the Healthcare
Revolution” and will be held on Sunday morning.
A spectacular group of panelists has been selected
that includes Dr. Tom Russell, Executive Director of
the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Bill Plested,
President of the American Medical Association, Dr.
Frank Lewis, Executive Director of the American Board
of Surgery, and Dr. Haile Debas, Executive Director
of Global Health Science and Dean Emeritus of the UCSF
School of Medicine. I am confident that every surgeon,
regardless of age or practice setting, will find this
panel to be both stimulating and highly informative.
We also plan to continue including a Scientific Panel
with focus on a topic to be determined by the submitted
abstracts. The Resident Paper Competition will continue
in its expanded format with multiple resident awards.
As always, the PCSA encourages abstracts from residents,
fellows, junior faculty, and particularly from the
new members. Our commercial supporters will again be
present to display their newest products and services.
As a designated National
Historic Landmark, the Hotel del Coronado is renowned
as one of the top ten resort
hotels in the world. It is an ideal destination for
an extended weekend seaside vacation for the entire
family. Multiple activities will be made available
for spouses and children at discounted prices including
the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, Sea World,
Old Town, Disneyland, and Legoland. The hotel itself
offers a wild variety of beach activities and all necessary
equipment. The hotel has recently completed a new state-of-the-art
spa and has eight restaurants and bars on site. Extended
stays at the group rate, based on availability, are
being offered by the hotel for those who want to take
advantage of the venue for a family vacation. Members
are encouraged to invite guests, who are welcome to
participate in the scientific meetings and social events.
The Southern California Caucus is working diligently
to make the 2008 meeting a memorable one and we encourage
you to join us in San Diego. Registration will open
in November and you are welcome to visit the PCSA website
www.pcsaonline.org for the latest information regarding
the meeting. An improved and user-friendly registration
system will be available for the 2008 meeting.
Caroline and I look forward to seeing you in February
and hope that you have a wonderful summer.
With warmest personal regards,
Bruce E. Stabile, M.D.
