PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the Northern California Caucus of the Pacific Coast Surgical Association, my colleagues and I would like to invite you to attend our 80th Annual Meeting of the Pacific Coast Surgical Association.

The meeting will be held at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco from February 13–16, 2009. Our leadership is always seeking better ways to provide the highest quality meeting at the lowest cost. I am delighted to report that the PCSA succeeded in making a net surplus for the 2008 Annual Meeting due, in part, to the generous support from our commercial supporters. Therefore, we are passing along this financial well-being to our members by reducing the registration fees for the 2009 Annual Meeting to the 2006 meeting levels. I am also pleased to announce that the accompanying spouses and guests of members and residents will be able to participate at reduced fees. For early signup, a registration form, which also lists the optional activities planned for the meeting, is enclosed.

There will be a New Members Reception in the Wilsey Court at the recently rebuilt de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park on Friday night, February 13. The Reception will begin at 6:30 pm and the dress is business casual.

The Scientific Session will begin on Saturday, February 14 at 8:00 am at the Fairmont Hotel. Saturday night is a free night so that members can enjoy the many fine restaurants and cultural events that are available in San Francisco. PCSA has specially arranged for you a dinner and circus show at Teatro ZinZanni at Pier 29 on the Embarcadero. Seating is limited, so we encourage you to sign up early for this highly entertaining and unique event at the discounted fee. The registration form for the meeting, dinner with circus show, and other PCSA activities is enclosed. We are also enclosing a list of suggested restaurants for the free night. Plan to make your own reservations early as the best places will be reserved quickly because of Valentine’s Day. We have enclosed a list of other cultural events and venues in our wonderful city that you or your family might wish to enjoy.

On Sunday, February 15, the Scientific Session will conclude at 12:30 pm. The afternoon will be free for exploring San Francisco or participating in one of the PCSA sports activities. Dr. Robert Allen has arranged for the golf tournament to be at the Presidio Club, and Dr. John Roberts has arranged for the tennis tournament to be held at the San Francisco Tennis Club. Again, please register early for these activities on the enclosed sign-up form to receive the PCSA discount fee.

On Sunday evening, the President’s Banquet will be held at 6:30 pm in the Venetian Room at the Fairmont Hotel. The Program Committee, chaired by Dr. Fred Weaver, has selected the best abstracts and coordinated the scientific program for the 2009 PCSA meeting. The selected abstracts and posters are enclosed. The program includes a President’s Forum that will address the importance of research and innovation by academic and clinical surgeons. Panelists will include Dr. Tom Russell, Executive Director of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Haile T. Debas, Director of Global Health and Dean Emeritus of the UCSF School of Medicine, Dr. Thomas Krummel, Chair of the Department of Surgery at Stanford, and Dr. Michael Harrison, past Chief of Pediatric Surgery at UCSF. These outstanding leaders in surgery have their fingers on the pulse of surgery and surgical science. Other items at the scientific session will include resident and fellow presentations and poster presentations.

Our Northern California Caucus plans to have an exciting scientific and social meeting this February. Quan Yang Duh and Ann Comer, William and Gisella Schecter, Neal and Phoebe Olcott, Michael and Gretchen Harrison, Jerry and Oksana Sydorak, and others are working hard to make this a memorable PCSA meeting.

Warmest regards,

Orlo and Carol Clark
President and Spouse
